Questioning

Why Questioning Matters

Intentional questioning is a powerful tool for deepening reflection, prompting critical thinking, and guiding meaningful conversations. For CTI coaches, asking the right questions at the right time helps candidates uncover insights, challenge assumptions, and take ownership of their professional growth. Effective questioning fosters an environment of curiosity, clarity, and continuous learning.

According to the CTI Coaching Standards, reflective coaches who develop strong questioning skills:

• Promote candidate-driven reflection and problem-solving
• Encourage analysis of instructional practices and student learning
• Use questioning to guide rather than direct
• Support candidates in identifying next steps aligned with their goals

Purposeful questioning strengthens the candidate’s capacity for inquiry and fosters a culture of reflection and growth.
