Listening

Why Listening Matters

Effective coaching begins with deep listening. When coaches engage in active, empathetic listening, they help candidates feel seen, heard, and supported. Listening without judgment encourages vulnerability, builds trust, and creates space for growth and meaningful reflection. Through intentional listening, coaches are better equipped to respond to their candidates’ needs and guide them toward professional success.

According to the CTI Coaching Standards, reflective coaches who prioritize listening:

• create space for candidate voice and autonomy
• build trust through consistent, focused attention
• respond thoughtfully to candidate needs and goals
• encourage reflection through curious and open-ended questions

A coach who listens well models empathy, responsiveness, and a belief in the candidate’s ability to grow.
