Elementary Math Strategies & Lessons

Featured Presenter

Dr. Iris Riggs

Dr. Riggs is interested in the measurement of teacher self-efficacy beliefs for teaching science and mathematics.  Additionally, as a CSUSB faculty member, she currently teaches induction coaches within a program for new teachers through the Riverside County Office of Education. Recently, in her capacity as a faculty member, she also worked in ACES, a program that promoted teachers’ ability to teach algebra through lesson study (http://aces.csusb.edu).

Assessing Elementary Math Student Performance
and Giving Feedback

How can you analyze student work in a way that helps you truly know what students understand and don’t understand about concepts?  This session will engage you in analyzing a student’s work through use of a rubric, along with considerations for how to give specific feedback to the student.  This session may also be of special interest if you are completing the CalTPA due to its focus on assessment and feedback.

Audience: CTI Induction Coaches and Candidates. This session is geared toward the elementary classroom setting.

An Introduction to Engaging Elementary Students in the Standards for Mathematical Practices

This session will build on your understanding of the Standards for Mathematical Practices and acquaint you with activities you can use to engage your students in these important practices.  If you want your students to do more thinking and have fun learning math, having them use these Practices can be just the approach you are seeking!

Audience: CTI Induction Coaches and Candidates. This session is geared toward the elementary classroom setting.

Problem-based Lessons for Elementary Mathematics

This module will help teachers learn to sequence problem-based math lessons to start with students independently solving a problem, followed by sharing of approaches and closing with discussion and comparison of multiple strategies.  This teaching approach is more of a “you do, we do, I do” approach, with the teacher coming in during discussion and closure to add content input and academic language.

Audience: CTI Induction Coaches and Candidates. This session is geared toward the elementary classroom setting.

Considering Place Value Materials as an Adaptation Strategy for Elementary Math Learners

Not all manipulatives are the same as teachers will discover in this module.  The differences between three types of place value materials will be experienced and defined by participants. Implications for supporting students with different levels of understanding will be considered.

Audience: CTI Induction Coaches and Candidates. This session is geared toward the elementary classroom setting.

Rubrics for Teacher and Student Use
(TPA Oriented)

This module will introduce you to rubrics as a means for assessing students. Participants will engage in the study of sample rubrics, develop a rubric, and consider implementation of rubrics for students’ self-assessment. This session may also be of special interest if you are completing CalTPA’s Cycle 2-Assessment-driven Instruction.

Audience:  CTI Induction candidates needing to complete TPA Cycle 2. Coaches are welcome. This session is geared toward the elementary classroom setting.

Engaging and Formatively Assessing Face-to Face Learners (TPA Oriented)

This module will expose you to strategies that can help you engage a higher number of students during your lessons.  With increased student participation, you will have more opportunities to informally assess your students’ understanding of concepts.  This session may also be of special interest if you are completing the CalTPA, due to its attention to informal assessment.

Audience:  CTI Induction Coaches and Candidates. This session is geared toward the elementary classroom setting.
